She raised five boys, mostly on her own, and never once apologized for who she was.
The Patron Saint of Single Mothers
Thank God I have a great memory.
And thank God I posted so much over the years about her.
A Wonderful Mother
A few months ago I was at my cousin's place, and he had a photo album out. There was a picture in there of my mom, her as a teenager, maybe early twenties. I'd never seen what she looked like at that age. I stood ten feet away from that photo for what felt like forever. I couldn't walk closer. It was like seeing a ghost.
Because my whole life, I've only ever had the same handful of pictures. This one was new. And it changed something.
The one I'd never seen. The one that stopped me cold.
"My mom forced me to listen to her all the time. Now that she's gone I play her all the time. Maybe Tina Turner is singing my mom happy birthday up in heaven."

"When she said she was coming to Edmonton to hold baby Jakob and die, I told her to stop being dramatic. I was in denial. She knew."
David DoucetteMy mother was a dramatic woman. And she earned every bit of it. When you live the life she lived, raising five boys on your own, burying a son, beating cancer more than once, you get to be dramatic.
She got off that plane in a wheelchair. She stayed. She held my son. And she let go.
That's how strong she was. She literally chose her moment. They say it was the diabetes that killed her. I say she gave her life raising her boys, and she got to see that it worked. She got to see that she raised five men who are all at the top of their respective fields. The best at what they do. Good people with good hearts.
That's what she gave us. And before she went, she got to hold the next generation in her arms.
